The coronavirus outbreak has led to significant increases in news consumption in mainstream media in all countries where we've conducted surveys in. There's been a substantial increase in the number of news programs on television as well as online news. More people now identify television as their primary source of news. This is a temporary break from the trend of declining news consumption. Because of lockdowns, it is becoming more difficult to publish newspapers in physical form, consumption has declined. It is likely that the shift to digital publishing will accelerate. In the majority of countries, however, social and online media usage has dramatically increased. WhatsApp had the greatest growth of around 10 percent in some countries. Additionally, more than 50% of those interviewed (51 percent) were part of an closed and open online group for sharing information, connecting with others, and participating in local support teams.

Media coverage of COVID-19 was high in all countries as of April 2020. It was in line with the national government's trust, and significantly higher than the level of politicians on their own. For information on COVID-19, media trust was higher than trust in video platforms, social media as well as messaging services. Concerns about misinformation in the world continue to rise as a result of our larger set of data that we've gathered since January. Concerns about misinformation in the world remain high even before the coronavirus outbreak. More than half of our world-wide sample of respondents said that they are concerned about what information is being disseminated online regarding news. While domestic politicians are most often cited as the source of misinformation , those who consider themselves right-wing, such as in the United States, are more likely to not blame the media. Facebook is seen almost everywhere as the main channel for spreading incorrect information. WhatsApp is however more responsible in countries like Brazil as well as Malaysia.

Our survey in January across the world found that less than four-in-10 (38%) of those polled said they are most likely to trust the news they read. This represents a decline of four percentage points from the previous year. 46 percent said they believe in the information they read. Public broadcasters are having their credibility eroded due to political partisans of both the right- and left-leaning political sides, due to increasing political polarisation and uncertainty. Our research shows that 60 percent of viewers still favor news without any particular opinion and just 28 percent prefer news to support or reinforce their opinions. The United States has seen a small increase in the number of people who are partisan since 2013. However most people seem to prefer information that is at least trying to be objective.

A majority (52 percent) prefer that media regularly reported on false statements made to them by politicians, rather than not highlighting them (29 percent). People are less comfortable viewing political ads on search engines and social media than they are with TV advertisements. Most people (58%) prefer to have platforms that prevent false statements, even though it means they have the power to decide on the ultimate decision. We have seen significant increases in the amount of money paid for online news in several countries such as the United States 20% (+4) and Norway 42% (+Cool, with smaller rises in a range of other markets. It is important to note that across all nations, the majority of people are still not paying for news online even though some publishers have now discovered a coronavirus increase.

For subscribers, the most important thing is the uniqueness and quality of the information. Subscribers are convinced that they receive superior information. However, a lot of people are content with the news that they get for free. Also, we observe a high percentage of non-subscribers (45 percent in the USA and 50% here in the UK) who say they could not be persuaded to pay. Higher levels of payment are found in countries like Norway and the United States in which there is an increase in the number of subscribers. the USA and Norway) between one third and half of subscriptions are given to a handful of major national brands, indicating that the winning-takes-all dynamic continues. In both countries, a significant minority are now taking out more than one subscription, usually by adding a local or specialized publication. For radio Unirea A Romanian commercial radio station. They have a format that focuses on 60% news from all areas and 40% music. They provide a range of programs that appeal to their listeners. They are attracted to news, contests, and interviews. They also love discussions, cultural shows, and music.

In the majority of countries local newspapers and their websites are the primary source of news on a particular town or region, reaching four in 10 (44%) every week. However, we found that Facebook and the other social media sites are now utilized by 33% (31 percent) of local news and information users. This puts more pressure on companies and their business models. The spread of news is expanding. More than half (28%) of all countries prefer news through an app or site. People aged 18-24 (so-called Generation Z) have an even less entanglement with websites and apps and are more than twice as likely to get news through social media. The use of news on Instagram has more than tripled across all age groups since the year 2018 and is set to beat Twitter within the next year.

To combat the shift to different platforms, publishers have been looking to build direct connections with consumers via mobile and email alerts. In the United States one in five (21 percent) use a news email weekly, and for almost 50% of them, it's their main method of getting news. Northern European countries tend to be slow in adopting email news channels. Finland only has 10 percent. Although the use of podcasts has grown over the last year, the coronavirus lockdowns may have temporarily changed this trend. All over the world the majority of respondents (50 percent) believe that podcasts offer more depth and understanding than other types of media. Meanwhile, Spotify has become the top destination for podcasts across many countries, surpassing Apple's podcast app.

The majority of people in the world, seven in 10 (69%) think climate change is an issue that needs to be addressed, however in the United States, Sweden, and Australia the majority of people disagree with this. These people of older age tend to be more right-leaning. Younger people can find a lot more information about climate change through social media and by following activists like Greta Thunberg. Voice-activated smart speakers like the Amazon Echo and Google Home continue to expand quickly. The UK has seen an increase in usage of smart speakers for all purposes with 14% to 19 percent, 7% to 13% in Germany and 9 to 12 percent in South Korea. Yet, we see that usage for news remains low in all markets.
